موقعيت تاريخي و جغرافيايي شهرستان سلماس :

شهر ديلمقان كه فعلاً اثري جز بقاياي چند اثر تاريخي در آن باقي نمانده است نطفه اصلي و هسته اوليه شهر سلماس مي باشد كه بعد از زلزله اي كه در شب چهارشنبه 17 ارديبهشت ماه سال 1309 هجري شمسي روي داد تخريب و با خاك يكسان مي شود و پس از زلزله در شمال غربي ديلمقان شهري جديد با اسلوب مهندسي ساخته مي شود و بدستور دولت وقت به نام « شاهپور » و سپس به « سلماس » تغيير نام پيدا كرد . اين شهر بر روي مدار 38 درجه و 12 دقيقه عرض شمال و 44 درجه و 46 دقيقه طول خاوري از نصف النهار گرينويچ با پهناي حدود 12 كيلومتر مربع بر سر راه شوسه اروميه به خوي و تبريز واقع شده است و هم اكنون از شهرهاي تابعه استان آذربايجان غربي مي باشد كه از شمال به شهرستان خوي ، از غرب به تركيه ، از جنوب به منطقه صوماي برادوست اروميه و از شرق به درياچه اروميه و منطقه گوني محدود مي شود و ارتفاع آن از سطح دريا 1420 متر مي باشد با توجه به حفاري ها و كاوش هاي باستانشناسي كه كه تا به حال انجام شده است ، قدمت سلماس به زمان مادها مي رسد كه در زمان هخامنشيان جزو آخرين قسمت ارمنستان محسوب مي شد و « زراوند » ( zaravand ) ناميده شده بود و در دوره اشكانيان يكي از ايالت هاي حائل ميان ايران و روم بوده و پس از شكست خسرو اشكاني ضميمه متصرفات ساسانيان مي شود كه يادگاري از دوره ساساني در كوه پير چاوش بر سر راه اروميه به سلماس بر روي يك تخته سنگ حجاري شده كه يكي اردشير و ديگري پسرش شاهپور است .
