موقعيت تاريخي و جغرافيايي شهرستان اروميه :

شهرستان اروميه مركز استان چكمه اي شكل آذربايجان غربي در شمال غرب كشور ايران واقع شده است. اين استان با سه استان آذربايجان شرقي ، كردستان و زنجان و سه كشور تركيه ، عراق و آذربايجان هم مرز است . اين شهرستان در جلگه اي بطول 70 كيلومتر و عرض 30 كيلومتر در كنار درياچه اروميه گسترده است . شهرستان اروميه از شرق با درياچه اروميه ، از غرب با كشور تركيه ، از جنوب با شهرستانهاي مهاباد ، نقده و اشنويه و از شمال با شهرستان سلماس همسايه است . آب و هواي آن تقريباً مديترانه اي و چهارفصل بهار ، تابستان ، پاييز و زمستان در آن به وضوح ديده مي شود . اختلاف درجه دماي آن از گرمترين روزهاي تابستان تا سردترين شبهاي زمستان تا 64 درجه تفاوت دما را نشان مي دهد و گرمترين ايام آن از 15 تيرماه تا 15 مرداد مي باشد . ارتفاع اين شهر از سطح درياهاي آزاد 1332 متر است . باغهاي سيب ، انگور و ساير ميوه جات و بوستان هاي آن در بهار و تابستان ديدني و ميوه هاي آن در كام ميهمانان اروميه بسيار شيرين و دلپذير است پاييز چنانكه از نام آذربايجان مشخص است و بخصوص ماه آذر در باغهاي بادام اروميه معني و مفهوم ديگري پيدا مي كند و زيبايي پاييز هر چه بيشتر در برگهاي خوش رنگ و فضاي دلچسب باغهاي بادام به چشم مي خورد و در زمستان كوهستانهاي مملو از برف مشتاقان ورزشهاي فرح بخش اسكي و كوهنوردي را به پيست اسكي خوشاكو و كوههاي مرتفع اين شهر فرا مي‌خواند . در مورد وجه تسميه اين شهر عقايد زيادي مطرح است . عده اي بر اين باورند كه چون در اروميه رودهاي زياد و آب فراوان وجود دارد و در زبان سرياني « ميه » يا « مياه » به معني آب مي باشد و «اور » به معني شهر است به همين جهت اين محل « اروميه » خوانده شده است . به همين جهت برخلاف نوع نوشتاري آن به صورت « اروميه » بيان كنوني آن توسط مردم محل نيز بيشتر « اورميه » شنيده مي شود پس از اسلام اروميه دومين شهر آذربايجان پس از مراغه به شمار مي رفت ، ( از سده پانزده ميلادي ) كه برج سه گنبد و مسجد جامع اروميه ارمغان بزرگ فرهنگ اسلامي شمرده مي شود . اروميه به جهت اينكه در ناحيه مرزي ايران و تركيه قرار گرفته است ، مورد توجه كشورهاي بزرگ قرار داشته است و هيات‌هاي گوناگون مذهبي آمريكايي ، آلماني ، روسي ، فرانسوي و ... در اين شهر موسساتي داير كرده بودند كه در پيشرفت فرهنگ و روشني انديشه مردم آن ناحيه سودمند بوده است .

شهر اروميه به جهت گردآمدن اقوام و اديان مختلف از قبيل آشوري ها ، ارمني ها و زرتشتي ها ( انتساب چند زرتشتي كه در هنگام تولد عيسي «ع» به بيت اللحم رفته بودند و در اروميه مدفونند حاكي از آن است كه اين شهر يكي از بزرگترين كانونهاي مذهبي و اجتماعي گذشته هاي روز بوده است ) يهودي ها و بالاخره مسلمانان يادگارهايي از قرن هاي مختلف را در دامان پير و زيبايش پاس داشته است .
