تاريخچه شهر خوي :

شهر خوي مركز شهرستان خوي در استان آذربايجان غربي با پهنه اي حدود 30 كيلومتر مربع در شمال استان آذربايجان غربي واقع شده است . معني واژه خوي و ريشه اين نام و اينكه از چه زماني به اين شهر خوي گفته اند روشن نيست . محمد امين رياحي ، نويسنده كتاب تاريخ خوي بر اين باور است كه شايد واژه خوي با جزء آخر نام شهر « اولخو » كه 2700 سال پيش در همين جا قرار داشته يا با جزء آخر نام « ساردوري » دژي كه يكي از شاهان اورارتو به نام ساردوري در كنار شهر اولخو ساخته بوده است ، بي ارتباط نباشد . واژه خوي در زبان كردي و پهلوي به معني نمك است از آن جا كه كردان بازمانده مادها بوده و يا اين كه به گفته خودشان مادها از آنها هستند و تا كنون زبان باستاني خود را كه گونه اي از زبان پارسي باستان است حفظ كرده اند ، مي توان گفت كه ساكنان نخستين خوي از مادها بوده اند و اينان مسكن نخستين خود را به دليل وجود معادن نمك در اين ناحيه « خوي » ناميده اند . از آنجا كه شهر خوي در سرزمين نسبتاً پست قرار گرفته است . در اصطلاح محلي آن را « خودي چو خوري » مي نامند . كاربرد نام خوي در شعر فارسي ، از جمله در شعرهاي خاقاني شرواني ، لامعي گرگاني و ديگران ، نشان مي دهد كه بيان آن در سده هاي گذشته هم به صورت امروزي بوده است . شاعران با استفاده از اينكه اين واژه ( خوي ) به معني عرق هم هست و در پهلوي xvai بيان مي شده است مضمون هايي به صنعت ايهام پرداخته اند و ظهير خونجي شاعر سده 6 و 7 هجري قمري در يك رباعي ، اصل گل سرخ را از شهر خوي دانسته است .

بنا به اظهار نظر ظهيري ، امروز نيز گل سرخ در شهر خوي و پيرامون آن فراوان است و حتي گونه هايي از آن در باغ هاي شهر ، به صورت خودرو بن و ريشه دارد و گل و گلاب خوي داراي امتياز و ويژه اي است . ماه خرداد را هم كه گلها شكفته مي شوند « گله ماه » مي نامند كه به صورت پهلوي « ماه گل » است و اين تعبير كهن نيز پيشينه بسيار بازار گل سرخ را در اين شهرستان مي دهد و همه اينها ادامه آبادي و فرهنگ را در شهر خوي در طي سدها مي رساند . اين شهر از قديم الايام داراي اهميت استراتژيك بوده است تا آنجا كه فتحعلي شاه قاجار با راهنمايي ژنرال گاردن ديوار استواري گرد آن ساخت . اين شهر يكي از شهرهاي كهن ايران است كه در دوران مادها و پيش از آنها وجود داشته است و در دوران هخامنشي ، اشكاني و ساساني نيز جز قلمرو آن ها بوده است . اين شهر در طي تاريخ كهن خود بارها توسط سرداران و پادشاهان مختلف از قبيل عتبه بن فرقد سلمي سردار اسلام و يوسف بن ابوالساج فتح شد . اين شهر به دليل جايگاه جغرافيايي و نظامي كه داشت ، از اهميت زيادي برخوردار بود . جنگ چالدران بين شاه اسماعيل و سلطان سليم در 920 هجري قمري در 70 كيلومتري شهر خوي در گرفت و همچنين در دوران حكومت بازماندگان نادرشاه افشار و زنديه ، امراي خاندان دنبلي مدتها در خوي حكومت كردند .
